South African middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis successfully defended his title against previous two-time champion Israel Adesanya in an exciting match at UFC 305, held at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The event, which took place on Saturday, August 18, saw du Plessis secure a dramatic fourth-round submission victory.
The fight began with both fighters exchanging blows and showcasing their skills. Du Plessis managed to land several takedowns in the second round, but Adesanya's resilience allowed him to escape and return to his feet. By the third round, Adesanya appeared to gain the upper hand with precise body shots and a powerful elbow, making him the favourite on live odds.
However, the tide turned in the fourth round when du Plessis landed a vicious left hook that wobbled Adesanya.
Seizing the moment, du Plessis followed up with three strong rights to Adesanya's head before pulling him down and locking in a rear-naked choke. Adesanya tapped out at 3:38 of the fourth round, marking du Plessis' first successful title defense.

Reflecting on his victory, du Plessis said, "I just made a stupid, dumb mistake on the ground," acknowledging the critical moment that led to his win. Despite the loss, Adesanya remained defiant about his future in the sport, stating, "I'm not f***ing leaving."
This victory adds to du Plessis' impressive record, having now defeated three former middleweight champions in a row, including Adesanya, Sean Strickland and Robert Whittaker.
As the reigning champion, du Plessis is expected to face Strickland next, continuing his journey to solidify his legacy in the UFC.
