The UK government has confirmed the allocation of 45,000 seasonal worker visas for the year 2025. This decision is part of an ongoing effort to address labor shortages in the agriculture and poultry sectors, which are crucial for the country's food security.

Of these visas, 43,000 are designated for horticulture, encompassing roles such as fruit and vegetable picking, while the remaining 2,000 are allocated to the poultry sector.

The seasonal worker visa program was initially introduced following the UK's exit from the European Union, which disrupted the steady supply of European laborers previously relied upon by UK farmers. The scheme has been extended multiple times to ensure that domestic food production remains stable and to prevent reliance on costly imports.

Despite its benefits, the program has faced criticism over potential exploitation risks. Workers under this visa are often tied to a single employer, which can lead to situations where they might be overworked or underpaid.

Concerns have also been raised about the living conditions provided to these workers, with reports highlighting issues such as unrealistic work targets and inadequate accommodation.

To mitigate these concerns, the UK government has pledged to enhance oversight of working conditions and conduct compliance checks in collaboration with industry partners.

Additionally, an annual worker survey report indicated that over 90% of participants had a positive experience, suggesting some level of satisfaction among the workforce.

Food Security Minister Daniel Zeichner emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This government recognizes that food security is national security, and this can only be achieved by supporting food and farming businesses." The continuation of the seasonal worker visa scheme provides growers and producers with the certainty needed to plan ahead and secure the necessary labor force to sustain their operations.
