UK Promises Nigerians Better Security Amid Anti-immigration Riots

In light of the recent unrest across several cities in the United Kingdom, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has reassured the Nigerian diaspora of their safety and security.

During a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Abuja, Montgomery emphasized the UK's commitment to protecting Nigerians amid the ongoing anti-immigration riots.

The riots, which erupted following the tragic death of three young schoolgirls in a knife attack, were exacerbated by misinformation suggesting that the attacker was an immigrant and radical Islamist.

This misinformation fueled protests that were subsequently co-opted by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups.

According to NiDCOM's statement on Wednesday, Montgomery reported that "12 British towns were affected by the disorder," and over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence.

To address the situation, "60 special courts, including UK police and legal operatives, have been established."

Montgomery also highlighted the UK's diverse and inclusive nature, stating that the country remains open to qualified individuals who wish to live, study, and work there.

He reiterated that the UK is home to people from various countries and races, underscoring its liberal stance towards immigration.
