Ukraine Enforces Telegram Ban for Officials Over National Security Concerns

Esther

Ukraine has taken a decisive step to enhance its national security by restricting the use of Telegram for government, military, and security officials.

This move comes in response to "threats" posed by the app, which was founded by Russian-born Pavel Durov.

The National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) announced the decision, emphasizing that it is a "matter of national security."

During a recent NSDC meeting, Budanov presented "substantiated evidence" indicating that Russian intelligence services have access to Telegram users' personal correspondence, including deleted messages, and their personal data. "I have always advocated freedom of speech, but the issue of Telegram is not a matter of freedom of speech; it is a matter of national security," Budanov stated.

As a result, Ukraine's cybersecurity centre has banned the Telegram app on official devices used by government officials, military personnel, employees in the security and defence sector, and critical infrastructure enterprises. Exceptions will be made only for those whose duties necessitate using the messenger.
