UNIPORT's Mandates Final-Year Students To Pay Clearance Fee of N649,400 Before October

Esther

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has mandated final-year students to pay a staggering N649,400 for clearance by October 4, 2024.

This directive has left many parents and students frustrated and questioning the university's administrative processes.

According to a document titled "List, Fees And Requirements For Final Year Online And Physical Clearance (2023/2024 academic session)," the breakdown of the fees includes:

- Admissibility Clearance: N77,000

- Medical Clearance: N64,000

- Year 4 Clearance Fee: N74,000

- Student Affairs Clearance Fee: N78,500

- Biometric Clearance Fee: N30,000

- Digital Final Course Enrolment Clearance Fee: N32,000

- JAMB and SSCE Certificate Verification Clearance Fee: N175,000

- GES Clearance Fee: N76,500

- Library Clearance Fee: N42,400

The university authorities have emphasized that all payments should be made directly to U&C bank, and receipts must be presented during registrations and clearances.

However, this announcement has not been without its detractors. Dr. Sam Kpenu, the University's Director of Public Relations, vehemently denied any knowledge of such a clearance list, describing it as "outrageous."

He stated, "I am not aware of that. We don't print such a thing. An old student paying N600,000 is a private university or what? If the school fees is N45,000, clearance fees will now be over N600,000 what are they clearing?"

Dr. Kpenu further questioned the legitimacy of the memo, asserting that the Quality Assurance unit does not have the authority to issue public memos. "The quality assurance doesn't release a public memo, it is either within her own office.

The information could come from a different area not the University of Port-Harcourt. It is Registrar that can sign any information for the university, and never in the history of the university have we published clearance fees," he added.

Despite these denials, a memo from the Director of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Unit, Office of the Vice Chancellor, dated July 4, 2024, confirms that all returning final-year students are to commence their registrations at the beginning of the second semester.

The memo, signed by Prof. Chioma Blaise Chikere, instructs students to proceed to various centers for enquiries about the required payments.
