The United States has announced its approval of a massive $5 billion sale of up to 600 Patriot missiles and related equipment to Germany.

This deal, which still requires Congressional approval, is aimed at bolstering Germany's national defense and enhancing interoperability with NATO forces.
The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated, "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe."
The Patriot missile system, known for its advanced air defense capabilities, can combat enemy aircraft and missiles up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) away at altitudes of up to 30 kilometers (19 miles).
Germany, which had as many as 36 Patriot systems during the Cold War, has seen this number dwindle over the years.
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Berlin donated three of its Patriot systems to Ukraine, leaving its defense forces with just nine systems.
The sale is part of a broader effort to modernize Germany's air defense capabilities. Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defence Systems at Raytheon, emphasized, "With this expansion, Germany will not only modernize its own important air defence but enhance its interoperability with allies and further strengthen a core NATO mission."
The deal signifies the global emphasis on advanced air and missile defense capabilities, reflecting the steadfast confidence in the Patriot system, which serves as the backbone of air defense for 19 countries, including Germany, the U.S., and Ukraine.
In addition to Germany, other European nations such as Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, and Sweden also operate Patriot systems, highlighting the widespread reliance on this technology across the continent.
