Kamala Harris's 2024 presidential campaign revealed it was targeted by foreign hackers. The campaign confirmed that its robust cybersecurity measures successfully prevented any breaches. This disclosure has reignited fears of foreign interference in US elections, reminiscent of the 2016 election cycle.
According to NBC, the FBI is currently investigating this phishing attempt along with similar attacks on both the Biden-Harris and Trump campaigns.
The Harris campaign stated, "We have robust cybersecurity measures in place and are not aware of any security breaches of our systems resulting from those efforts."
The situation brings back memories of the 2016 election when Russia was widely believed to have hacked the Democratic party’s email system to destabilize Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid and aid Donald Trump. This time, the FBI's warning came after Donald Trump's campaign claimed it had been hacked in an email phishing attempt, suspected to have been carried out by Iran.
The Washington Post reported that three Biden-Harris campaign staff members received spear-phishing emails designed to look legitimate, aiming to gain access to wider email communications. It remains unclear whether these attempts were successful, but the Harris campaign's response suggests confidence that their systems were not compromised.
In contrast, the Trump campaign experienced a hack in June, leading to leaked files. However, the campaign did not report the incident to the FBI due to its suspicion of the agency.
A spokesperson for the Trump campaign said, "I was informed by the authorities that a couple of my personal email accounts have been compromised. I really don’t know more about it. And I’m cooperating. It’s all very strange."
US intelligence officials have accused Iran of attempting to sow discord and undermine Trump's re-election efforts, although Iran has denied these accusations.
