US Elections: US Vice Presidential Candidates Confirm to October Debate

The 2024 US Presidential election, the vice-presidential candidates of the major parties have confirmed their participation in a debate scheduled for October 1, 2024.

This announcement comes after a period of uncertainty about whether the debate would take place at all.

The running mates of White House rivals Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio’s Republican Senator J.D. Vance, respectively, have accepted an invitation from CBS News for the showdown.

The confirmation was made public on August 15, 2024. CBS News had initially proposed four potential debates to be held in September and October.

Walz responded affirmatively on social media platform X, saying, "See you on October 1, JD," before the Harris campaign officially confirmed the date.

This debate will occur after early voting has already commenced in several states.

Vance also accepted the October 1 invitation and suggested an additional debate on September 18, which CNN had offered. He argued that "the American people deserve as many debates as possible."

There had been some doubt over whether the encounter would take place at all. Vance expressed his willingness to participate in the October 1 debate during an interview with Fox News but criticized the format of previous debates, stating he would not engage in "one of these fake debates… where they don’t actually have an audience," referencing the June 27 encounter between Trump and Biden.

Kamala Harris, who entered the race late to replace President Joe Biden following his withdrawal due to concerns over his age and unpopularity, is aiming to make history as the first female president.

She and her running mate, Tim Walz, are heading to the national convention in Chicago next week, buoyed by a strong start that has seen them reverse Trump’s polling leads, break fundraising records, and attract large, enthusiastic crowds to their rallies.

In almost all of the swing states that typically decide US elections, Harris is now either level with or ahead of Trump, who won the presidency in 2016 but was defeated by Biden in 2020.

This upcoming debate is expected to be a critical moment in the campaign, providing voters with a clear view of the vice-presidential candidates' positions and readiness to assume office if necessary.
