President Bola Tinubu, represented by Senator George Akume, on October 6th, 2024, during the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Abuja emphasized the Nigerian government's commitment to fostering highly motivated teachers.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality of education across the nation. Tinubu highlighted that government policies and legislations have been designed to ensure "availability, accessibility, professional development, motivation, monitoring and evaluation systems" for teachers.
The president underlined the importance of teachers' welfare as a cornerstone for empowering women, preventing diseases, and reducing poverty.
He noted that the National Policy on Education aims to produce "highly motivated, conscientious and efficient classroom teachers at all levels of our educational system." This policy also seeks to provide teachers with the necessary intellectual and professional background to excel in their roles.
Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, reiterated the federal government's dedication to equipping teachers with the tools needed for success, despite the challenges they face. He stressed the critical role of education in national development, stating, "Education is not just about imparting knowledge; it is about building a nation."
The celebration also featured cultural presentations and awards, including the President’s Teachers and School Excellence Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to education. The theme for this year's World Teachers Day was “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” reflecting the ongoing efforts to appreciate and empower educators in Nigeria.
