We're Enjoying Power but It's Unaffordable - Band A Customers Calls for Tariff Review

Esther

The News Agency of Nigeria has reported that Band A electricity customers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are calling for a downward review of the high electricity tariffs.

These customers, who enjoy at least 20 hours of electricity daily, are currently charged ₦209.5 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Despite the reliable power supply, many residents find the cost unbearable amidst the country's economic challenges.

Mrs. Amen Odigie, a civil servant from Lugbe, expressed her struggle with the high electricity bills, stating that she pays over ₦30,000 monthly for her two-bedroom flat. She emphasized that this expense is unsustainable given her salary and the prevailing economic hardship.

Similarly, Mr. Ugochukwu Okafor, a vulcanizer, and Mrs. Anita Adaje, a fashion designer, both highlighted how the steep tariffs are affecting their livelihoods, with Adaje noting that the high costs deter customers from paying, thereby impacting her business profitability.

In Area 10, printers like Mr. Festus Ogunbor and Mr. Chidi Okeke also voiced their concerns. Ogunbor mentioned that he spends more than ₦30,000 daily to power his printing machines, which significantly affects his business operations. Okeke added that the government should consider reducing the tariffs to support businesses and encourage entrepreneurship.

The rising electricity costs have sparked widespread frustration among Band A consumers, who feel burdened by the financial strain. Many are urging the government to reassess the tariff structure to ensure it aligns with the economic realities faced by average Nigerians.
