We Sold Petrol to NNPC in Dollars - Dangote Refutes NNPC's ₦898 per litre Claim

The Dangote Refinery has firmly countered claims made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited regarding the pricing of petrol.

The NNPC had asserted that it purchased petrol from the Dangote Refinery at ₦898 per litre. However, Dangote Refinery has urged Nigerians to disregard this claim, labeling it as "misleading and mischievous." According to a statement released by Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote, the refinery sold petrol to the NNPC in dollars, not naira.

This transaction method reportedly resulted in substantial savings compared to the current costs of importing fuel. Chiejina emphasized, "Our attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to NNPCL spokesperson, Mr. Olufemi Soneye, that we sell our PMS at ₦898 per litre to the NNPCL.

This statement is both misleading and mischievous, deliberately aimed at undermining the milestone achievement recorded today, September 15, 2024."

The Dangote Refinery has called on the public to await a formal announcement on the pricing by a technical committee of the Federal Government, which is set to commence on October 1, 2024. "We urge Nigerians to disregard this malicious statement and await a formal announcement on the pricing, by the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries," Chiejina added.

In response to the controversy, the NNPC deployed 300 trucks to the Dangote Refinery's loading gantry for distribution, highlighting efforts to streamline fuel distribution and stabilize supply within the country.

The Minister of Finance, Wale Edu, confirmed that the NNPC would be the sole buyer of petrol from the Dangote Refinery, responsible for distributing it to other local marketers.
