The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently embroiled in internal conflict as it considers disciplinary measures against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
This move comes in response to allegations of anti-party activities, particularly during the party primaries. The PDP has reactivated its disciplinary committee, led by Chief Tom Ikimi, to thoroughly investigate these claims.
The disciplinary action against Wike is part of a broader effort by the PDP to address internal discord. According to Umar Sani, a Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, the situation has often been mischaracterized as a personal clash between Abubakar Atiku and Nyesom Wike. However, Sani emphasizes that the real impetus behind the disciplinary proceedings is the PDP Governors' Forum, which has recently become active again to tackle the party's internal crises.
The allegations against Wike are not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of behavior perceived as undermining the party's unity.
The disciplinary body has received multiple petitions concerning Wike and other members who allegedly compromised the party's interests during the primaries. This has led some within the PDP to question Wike's continued membership, highlighting the severity of the accusations.
While legal constraints may limit the outright removal of officials, they do not prevent the PDP from conducting internal disciplinary actions. This approach allows the party to maintain order and discipline without overstepping legal boundaries.
The reactivation of the PDP Governors' Forum signifies a collective effort to resolve these issues, underscoring the party's commitment to addressing internal challenges.
