Wike Proclaims Abuja Park and Pay Scheme as Illegal

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has declared the Park and Pay scheme in Abuja illegal.

This announcement was made during a live media parley with select journalists to mark his one year in office.

The Park and Pay system, initially introduced in July 2012, aimed to regulate on-street parking and reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Wike's decision came after a senior advocate alerted him to fraudulent activities within the scheme. According to Wike, "A call from a senior advocate brought to light a scheme that has been siphoning government funds under the guise of a legal operation."

He explained that private consultants were pocketing 80% of the revenues, leaving only 20% for the FCT administration. This revelation highlighted a critical flaw in the system, allowing private entities to exploit government resources.

The minister recounted an incident where individuals claiming to be from the Transport Secretariat attempted to seize cars from a senior advocate's office. Upon investigation, Wike discovered unauthorized agreements between the secretariat and these so-called consultants.

He stated, "I wasn’t aware of this, so I called the person in charge of it. I asked, ‘Who collects the money?’ Unknown to us, there are agreements between the secretariat and some people who claim to be consultants."

Wike assured the public that immediate action would be taken to dismantle the operation, emphasizing that such activities were illegal and non-existent in the FCT.

He urged residents to report any similar cases of corruption to the authorities for prompt action. "These are things we need to fight within the system. Sometimes, if you don’t bring it to our attention, we may not know. We can’t be everywhere," he added.
