Wike Takes Action Against Beggars in Abuja, Vows to Improve City's Safety

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a campaign to remove beggars from the streets of Abuja.

This initiative, which Wike described as a "war on beggars," aims to tackle what he perceives as both an embarrassment and a security risk for the city.

During the official commencement of a new access road construction in the Katampe District, Wike expressed his concerns about the increasing number of beggars, stating, "Abuja is returning to a beggar’s city."

He emphasized the urgency of the situation by declaring, "If you know you have a sister, you have a brother who is a beggar on the road, do something, because from next week, we will carry them; we will take them out of the city."

Wike further highlighted the potential security threats posed by individuals posing as beggars, noting, "Sometimes the supposed beggars may not be beggars but criminals pretending to be beggars."

He assured residents that this action is part of broader efforts to enhance security, allowing them to "sleep with their two eyes closed."

While acknowledging that some might be unhappy with this decision, Wike maintained that the primary goal is the well-being of the people, asserting, "What is important is that we must do our work. If you are not happy, there is nothing we can do, but for the well-being of the people, it is key."
