The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria's anti-graft agency, has firmly denied allegations that its X account (formerly Twitter) was hacked.
The commission's spokesman, Dele Oyewale, clarified the situation in a statement on August 15th, 2024, attributing the recent outage of their social media platform to routine maintenance and an upgrade aimed at enhancing the agency’s online presence.
"The official Twitter account has been unavailable for three days straight, sparking speculation that it may have been compromised by a group of suspected cybercriminals," Oyewale explained.
However, he assured the public that "the report about the cyberattack is not true. Nobody hacked our Twitter account. EFCC’s account was not hacked. We are updating it."
Oyewale further elaborated that the temporary unavailability of the account, which boasts over two million followers, was a precautionary measure and not a response to any security breach. "We are updating it to ensure that we have a more globally compliant X account," he added.
The EFCC's clarification comes amidst speculations that suspected internet fraudsters, who had threatened to wage cyber warfare against the agency, were behind the account's downtime. Despite these rumors, the commission has maintained that the outage was solely due to internal technical work.
