President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as the new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, succeeding Betta Edu.
This decision has been met with widespread approval, particularly from the Coalition of Lawyers for Truth and Justice (CLTJ), who have lauded it as a "thoughtful choice."
Professor Yilwatda, who holds a PhD in Digital Systems Engineering, is recognized for his impressive credentials and past achievements. Barrister Moses Okino, a spokesperson for the CLTJ, highlighted Yilwatda’s role in establishing Nigeria's first Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) and his involvement in the World Bank-funded STEP-B project.
Okino described him as “an outstanding fit” for the ministry, emphasizing his reputation for integrity during his tenure at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The appointment comes after the suspension of Betta Edu, the former minister, following an alleged ₦585 million scandal.
The CLTJ expressed optimism that Yilwatda's expertise in digital systems and humanitarian initiatives would significantly bolster the ministry’s efforts to address critical issues such as food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and displacement. "He brings a fresh sense of hope and renewal to a ministry previously marred by controversy," Okino stated.
Yilwatda's commitment to the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities is seen as a transformative potential for Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.
The coalition urged Nigerians to support Yilwatda, expressing confidence that he would usher in a “new era of hope and progress.”
