Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has openly criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki, asserting that Obaseki has never independently won an election.
According to Shaibu, "even the governor couldn’t win his local government," a statement he made during a chat with Arise TV on Monday.
Shaibu claimed personal credit for Obaseki's past political successes, stating, "I feel vindicated; even the governor couldn’t win his local government. I won my unit, ward, and local government. Where are the governor’s results? He has never won; we always assisted him."
This criticism came after Obaseki lost his local government area to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, emerged victorious in the September 21 election, securing 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party came a distant third with 22,763 votes.
Shaibu also advised Obaseki to apologize to the people of Edo State, emphasizing the governor's reliance on others for his political achievements. "What is left now is for him to go back and start begging and apologizing to the people of Edo State and he has a lot of them that he needs to go and apologize to," Shaibu added.
