Former Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has openly criticized the club for their decision to sell Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli.

Matic, who joined Ligue 1 club Rennes on August 14, 2023, for a reported transfer fee of €3 million, expressed his discontent with the move, stating that Manchester United has "made a mistake" in letting McTominay go.
Matic's comments come amidst a backdrop of major changes within Manchester United's midfield lineup. The club has recently secured the services of Mason Mount, who was their top choice to bolster the midfield.

Mount, along with Bruno Fernandes and Hannibal, now forms the core of United's attacking midfield, with contracts extending to 2028, 2027, and 2025 respectively.
Erik ten Hag, the current manager of Manchester United, has also weighed in on the situation, attributing the sale of McTominay to the Premier League's PSR ruling.
This regulatory framework has evidently influenced the club's transfer decisions, leading to the departure of a player who many, including Matic, believe still had much to offer.
Matic's critique is not without context. His own career trajectory saw him moving from Chelsea to Manchester United under the guidance of José Mourinho, a decision he described as "very quick and very clear" due to Mourinho's influence.
Now at Rennes, Matic has played in 13 Ligue 1 games, receiving 7 yellow cards and facing 2 suspensions, while contributing to only 2 wins for the team.
